Violet Red Bile Glucose Agar, also known as VRBGA, is a selective medium used for the detection and enumeration of coliform bacteria in food and water samples. This agar contains peptones, bile salts, glucose, crystal violet, and neutral red, which work together to inhibit the growth of non-coliform bacteria while allowing the growth of coliforms.

Key Features:

  • Selective: Inhibits the growth of non-coliform bacteria
  • Indicator: Neutral red and crystal violet help in distinguishing coliforms
  • Enriching: Contains glucose for the growth of coliform bacteria

Usage:

To use VRBGA agar, inoculate the sample onto the surface of the agar using a sterile technique. Incubate the plate at 35-37°C for 18-24 hours. After incubation, look for the presence of red/pink colonies, which indicate the presence of coliform bacteria. Count the colonies to estimate the number of coliform bacteria in the sample.

Storage:

Store VRBGA agar at room temperature in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep the agar tightly sealed when not in use to prevent moisture absorption.

Overall, VRBGA agar is a reliable and efficient medium for the detection of coliform bacteria in various samples, making it an essential tool in microbiology laboratories.
