What's the difference between qualitative and quantitative filter paper?

Qualitative filter papers are used for routine everyday filtration. Filtration where the filtrate matters and a trace of paper fibre or ash is seen as acceptable. Quantitative papers are ashless. They burn away to negligible residue (usually under 0.01%). They're used for gravimetric analysis. This is where you weigh the retained solid. Ocon Chemicals has them both. We have stock them in cellulose and glass grades.

How do I choose the right filter paper grade?

Grades balance particle retention against filtration speed. Coarser, faster papers (for example like Whatman Grade 1 or 4) suit general clarifying. But finer, slower papers (Grade 2, 5 or ashless grades) capture smaller particles for very precise work. Thicker grades handle heavy loads. Fluted (folded) papers speed up gravity filtration. Ocon Chemicals stocks a full range of grades. We have them in all sizes and pre-folded circles.

Filter paper or glass microfibre filters. Which should I use?

Cellulose filter paper is good for general types of filtration and analytical work with aqueous samples. Glass microfibre filters (like GF/C and GF/D) are binder-free. They handle higher flow rates and temperatures and they retain very fine particles. They are perfect for gravimetric work. And also for suspended-solids (TSS) testing and pre-filtration. Ocon Chemicals has the two of them in a range of retentions and diameters.

Which membrane filter material should I choose?

Match the membrane to your sample. Nylon and cellulose acetate for general aqueous work. PES for fast-flowing aqueous samples and buffers with low protein binding. PVDF for low-binding aqueous and organic samples. And PTFE for aggressive solvents, acids and gases. Hydrophilic membranes wet with water. While hydrophobic PTFE is good for organics and venting. Ocon Chemicals has these in 0.2 and 0.45µm.

Which syringe filter pore size and material do I need?

Use a 0.45µm syringe filter for routine clarification and HPLC sample prep. Use 0.2µm (0.22µm) for finer particulates or sterilising small volumes. Choose the right membrane for your solvent. PTFE for organic and aggressive solvents. PES or PVDF for aqueous samples. Nylon for mixed use (avoid it with proteins). When should I use a vacuum filtration unit? And disposable or reusable?

Vacuum filtration speeds up filtering larger volumes. It’s used to clarify or sterilise media, buffers and samples. Disposable bottle-top units like Stericup and Sartolab come pre-sterilised. This helps convenience with no cross-contamination reusable glass. Or PP filter holders are economical for repeat use and gravimetric work. Both need a vacuum pump. What is silica gel used for in the lab? And can it be regenerated?

Silica gel is a really porous desiccant that adsorbs moisture. It does this to keep chemicals, instruments and desiccators dry. Self-indicating types change colour when saturated. For example orange fading to green or colourless. This is so you can see when to replace them. Most silica gel can be regenerated by heating up to around 120°C.
