Nitrile, latex or vinyl? Which disposable glove should I choose?

Nitrile gloves give you the best chemical and puncture resistance all round. They are also latex-free. This makes them the safe default option if you have any latex allergy concerns. Latex gloves do give you really good fit and dexterity. But they can sometimes trigger allergic reactions. Vinyl gloves are economical. Use them for short and low-risk tasks. Ocon Chemicals stocks all three. We have them powder-free and in sizes XS–XL. We also have several colours you can pick from.

Which gloves should I use for handling chemicals and solvents?

Choose gloves tested to EN ISO 374 rather than standard exam gloves for chemical work. And check the breakthrough time for whatever your specific substance is. If you have heavier nitrile, neoprene and butyl gloves, they resist different chemical families. You should match the glove to the chemical. Do this using a compatibility chart. Ocon Chemicals has chemical-resistant options. We have long-cuff nitrile and neoprene. And also heat-resistant gloves.

What's the difference between FFP2 and FFP3 masks? And disposable vs reusable respirators?

FFP2 respirators filter out at least 94% of airborne particles. FFP3 ones filter out at least 99%. This gives more protection against fine dusts. Also against aerosols and hazardous powders. Disposable FFP masks (that are marked "NR") are what you call single-shift. Reusable half-face respirators take replaceable P2/P3 filters for using them long term. All tight-fitting respirators will need what we call face-fit testing. Ocon Chemicals has got in stock FFP2, FFP3 and also reusable respirators.

Which lab coat or coverall do I need?

It really all depends on your work. Reusable cotton or poly-cotton coats are good for general lab use. The back-fastening Howie style is usually liked by clinical and microbiology labs. Disposable coveralls then protect against particles or limited liquid splash. This is for messier or contamination-sensitive tasks. Ocon Chemicals has got it all. What eye protection do I need in the lab? Safety glasses or goggles?

Safety glasses that are certified to EN 166 will protect you against impact. They suit normal tasks. sealed safety goggles give better protection. Against splashes, dusts and fine aerosols. Because of this they're the preferred option when it comes to handling liquids or chemicals. Anti-fog and anti-scratch coatings make the comfort and visibility better. Do I need a flammable or hazardous storage cabinet?

Do you store flammable liquids in your lab like acids or other hazardous chemicals? A fire-resistant safety cabinet helps you contain spills. It also helps lower fire risk. It supports compliance with workplace fire-safety and chemical-storage duties. Its super important to keep incompatible chemicals separated. For example keep acids away from flammables. What should a laboratory spill kit have in it? Do I need eyewash?

A good spill kit has a lot of things. It has absorbents and PPE such as gloves and goggles. It has disposal bags and clear instructions, sized to your largest likely spill. Choose a chemical, oil-only or general-purpose kit. Pick one to match your hazards. Where splashes are a possibility of happening, you need to have pH-neutral eyewash. Or a plumbed eyewash station.
