  • Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is a biogenic organosulfur compound released from the ocean to the atmosphere, forming a main component of the global sulfur cycle. Its thermal decomposition behaviour in the gas phase has been studied in a static system at 681-723K, and the mechanism of its photochemical oxidation in the atmosphere has been described. The rate constant of the gas phase reaction between OH radicals and DMS has been determined by relative rate methods and flash photolysis, the differential Raman cross section has been measured at different excitation wavelengths, and its adsorption on activated carbons has been reported to take place by hydrogen bonding.
