Laboratory Glassware Frequently Asked Questions

What is borosilicate glass and is it safe for laboratory use?

Borosilicate glass is a low expansion glass that's made with boron trioxide. This gives it really good resistance to things like thermal shock. It will also be resistant to most acids and chemical attack. It doesn’t contain any lead and it is non-toxic and chemically inert. This means that it won't leach into your samples or react with your samples. Because of this, it is the standard choice for accurate and contamination-free lab work. A lot of the glass beakers, flasks, cylinders and reagent bottles in this range are borosilicate. Take a look!

What temperatures can laboratory glassware withstand? Can it be autoclaved?

Borosilicate lab glassware usually can withstand continuous temperatures up to roughly 500°C. It can usually withstand sudden temperature changes of about 160°C. This means it can be heated on hotplates and autoclaved for sterilisation. Polypropylene (PP) labware is autoclavable to roughly around 121°C. You should always check the individual product specification to be safe. And avoid direct flames on graduated or volumetric glassware. Excess heat can actually even affect calibration.

What's the differences between Class A and Class B lab glassware?

Class A glassware is always made to tighter tolerances. It’s also certified for higher accuracy. This is good for analytical, QC and regulated work, basically in areas where precise volumes really matter a lot. Class B has much wider tolerances. Usually about double. It’s really good for routine or educational use. Class AS is Class A accuracy with faster delivery times. In this range you’ll see Class A, AS and B volumetric flasks, cylinders, pipettes and burettes.

When should I use a beaker? When a measuring cylinder? And when to use a volumetric flask?

Beakers should be used for mixing, heating things and rough very volume estimates. They're the least accurate. Measuring cylinders give you much better everyday accuracy for the most part for dispensing liquids. Volumetric flasks are by far the most precise. They’re calibrated to hold one exact volume for preparing standard solutions and for preparing dilutions. As a sort of rule, the more accuracy your method needs, the further you move from beaker to cylinder to volumetric flask. Remember that!

What's the main difference between volumetric, graduated and serological pipettes?

A volumetric (bulb) pipette delivers a really accurate fixed volume. It’s most ideal for preparing standards. A graduated pipette has a scale. This means you can measure a range of volumes with pretty good accuracy. A serological pipette is actually graduated the whole way to the tip. You can dispense larger, variable volumes. Often in cell culture. You should choose based on the accuracy and volume flexibility that your specific task requires.

What is a burette used for? How do I read one accurately?

A burette dispenses precise and variable volumes of liquid. It is used mainly for titrations. To read it accurately, you need to keep it vertical and take the measurement at eye level. You take it from the bottom of the meniscus. This is to avoid the parallax error. Class AS and Schellbach designs make readings a lot faster and a lot clearer. The range we have here includes glass burettes with PTFE stopcocks and automatic titrating burettes.

Should I choose glass or polypropylene (plastic) labware?

Borosilicate glass has the best chemical resistance. It has the best transparency and heat tolerance too. It’s ideal for accurate or very high-temperature work. Polypropylene (PP) labware is shatter-resistant. It’s lightweight and cost-effective. This makes it a much safer choice for fieldwork, teaching and everyday sort of handling. Many items here in this range are available in both. This includes beakers, measuring cylinders and it includes reagent bottles. This means you can match the material to whatever the task.
